Strategic Teaching and Learning is the brainchild of Darlene Pope who has taught middle school social studies for 34 years. Currently she teaches at Jefferson Middle School in the city of San Gabriel, California. Besides teaching 8th grade social studies she is also an AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) coordinator, an AVID elective teacher, and the Social Studies Department Chair.
Darlene has been involved in staff development since the year 2000 when she became an ELD trainer for her district. In 2001 she began consulting for the College Board in the areas of Pre-AP and Vertical Teams. She has also written and reviewed several workshops for the College Board and has presented locally, nationally, and internationally. In 2002 Darlene became a staff developer for AVID. In this capacity she has presented for LACOE and AVID Center. She has presented at local schools as well as at AVID Summer Institutes. In 2006 Darlene began to present at schools as part of the GEAR UP program.
Darlene received a Bachelor’s Degree in History and Humanities from Pepperdine University and a MS in Learning and Literacy in the Content Areas from Walden University. She is has been married to her husband, David, for 32 years and has two children Nicole, who attends NYU, and Michael, who attends SDSU.
